The look of the ‘Grand Budapest’ was influenced by the Grandhotel Pupp, Mírové námesti 2 in Karlovy Vary, in the Czech Republic. The 228-room hotel, built in 1701, was – like the ‘Grand Budapest’ – nationalised by the communist government in 1951, gradually slipping into decline.
The romatic village of Karlo Vary is named after Charles IV. He was a Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia and the founder of the city (1370). The city ist world famous for its 300 springs, the most visited spa town in the Czech Republic. We did a lovely press trip and checked-in at the Grand Hotel Pupp & Casino to get a bit of James Bond 007.

Grandhotel Pupp, a 228-room luxury hotel located in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), Czech Republic, doubles for Hotel Splendide in Montenegro in the 2006 movie Casino Royale.The hotel is located very close the the building that doubled as the Casino Royale in the film. Many exterior shots were taken at this location, including Bond walking from the hotel to the casino.

The exterior of the Hotel Splendide is actually the Grandhotel Pupp, which is not in Montenegro, but in fact in the town of Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic. This hotel has been in operation since 1711 and has been used as a filming location for many other films, such as La Vie en Rose with Marion Cotillard and Shanghai Knights with Jackie Chan.

The Casino Royale Hotel “Splendide” is in reality the Grandhotel Pupp in Eastern Czech city Karlovy Vary – not to be confused with a real Hotel Splendid, that opened four years after the release of Casino Royale in Montenegrian city Bečići. The conspicuous Pupp resides at a plaza on the Southern end of Karlovy Varys old town.

But most of the shooting of Montenegro took place in the Czech Republic. The outer side of Casino Royale was filmed at Kaiserbad Spa in Karlovy Vary. Likewise, the shots of outer Montenegro Railway Station were taken at Mill Colonnade, Karlovy Vary. Hotel Splendid in ‘Casino Royale’ is known as Pupp Hotel in the actual world.
